"Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was born in Ludhiana district, Punjab and was the son of Flight Lieutenant Tarlochan Singh Sekhon. He played an extremely important part in bringing down Pakistani enemy jets during the 1971 war by showing extreme bravery and skill. He was unable to escape from his fighter aircraft that had been hit ultimately leading to his martyrdom. His body could not be found due to the mountainous terrain. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously and was also praised by Salim Baig Mirza, the pilot who shot him down."
