Major Gupta and six others from his team captured the Pt 4950 peak at Tuloling before they were killed in fierce combat. He died after capturing two difficult slopes the same day on the windswept and icy slopes of the Drass Sector. He perished on the battlefront when a fusillade of bullets from the Pakistanis tore open his torso, but not before he and his company men had slain seven members in the enemy camp. He was admired greatly by all in his hometown of Dehradun and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously. He is survived by his wife, Captain Jayshree.
